Baby Safety 101 delivers expert-backed guidance to prevent the most common baby injuries

MT. LAUREL, N.J., Nov. 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ --In recognition of National Injury Prevention Day, the Baby Safety Foundation has released a powerful new resource for parents and caregivers: Baby Safety 101, a free digital manual designed to help families prevent the most common injuries during a baby's first year.

Created with input from pediatricians, neonatologists, emergency physicians, and child safety experts, Baby Safety 101 distills trusted safety information into simple, visual chapters that families can read in about an hour. Topics include safe sleep, car seat safety, babyproofing, feeding safety, emergency preparedness, and baby product use—all grounded in real research and endorsed by leading experts.

"Parenting is joyful, but it can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to safety," said Lisa Trofe, Executive Director of the Baby Safety Foundation. "Baby Safety 101 is designed to make safety approachable and accessible. It's a resource every new parent should read before the baby arrives, then share with grandparents, babysitters, and anyone who helps care for their child."

Each chapter of Baby Safety 101 is designed for quick, practical learning right from a smartphone. It teaches parents how to set up a safe sleep space, install and use car seats correctly, create safe play and feeding environments, and respond in medical emergencies. The manual also includes printable checklists for babyproofing, home emergency kits, and emergency contacts.

The Foundation recommends reading Baby Safety 101 during pregnancy or before a baby comes home, bookmarking it for future reference, and sharing it with caregivers.

Baby Safety Foundation Awards More Than $113,000 in Microgrants, Opens 2026 Applications

Nonprofits can apply for up to $5,000 in funding; deadline Oct. 24

MT. LAUREL, N.J., October 7, 2025 — Applications are open for the Baby Safety Foundation’s 2026 microgrant program, which provides grants of up to $5,000 each to nonprofit organizations advancing infant health and safety in their communities. Eligible 501(c)(3) partners are invited to apply online through Friday, October 24, 2025.

Since launching in 2023, the Foundation has awarded a total of $113,849 in microgrants, supporting programs that provide safe sleep education, essential supplies, and outreach through nonprofits. Each cycle has expanded in scope and reach, underscoring the growing demand for this type of community based support.

“What excites me is not just the dollars we’ve given, but how this program keeps building momentum,” said Lisa Trofe, Executive Director of the Baby Safety Foundation. “Every grant cycle, more organizations step forward with creative solutions, and together we’re proving that small investments can drive big, lasting change for families and local communities.”

Last year, the Foundation’s microgrants empowered 11 organizations to reach thousands of families across the country. Their work included distributing newborn supply kits in Chicago and providing safe sleep materials in 22 languages on the West Coast. These results show the lasting impact of the program as the next round of grants opens.

Advanced the Foundation’s mission to support maternal and infant health through outreach, partnerships, and distribution of safe sleep supplies to families with infants under the age of one.

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
Supported the health and safety of babies in the Chicago community by training community-based ambassadors to educate more than 300 expectant parents and caregivers of infants.

Boston Children's Hospital
Ensured a safer start for infants while easing the financial burden on parents by providingcribs, sheets, and wearable blankets to families in need while hosting various sleep awareness events around the community.

EveryMom Chicago
From sleep sacks to cribs, hundreds of families received essentials for safer sleep including 385 newborn supply kits and more than 400 sleep sacks across 43 zip codes.

Hennepin Healthcare Trauma Prevention Program
Increased access to safe sleep practices during two major events where nearly 250 caregivers received safe sleep education. In addition, families took home sleep sacks, safe sleep books, and pacifiers to help reinforce safe sleep practices at home.

Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital of Stanford
Provided support to patients and the community by educating and supplying 247 families with safe sleep essentials.

Maternal and Child Health Consortium
Offered 333 mothers comprehensive prenatal and postnatal education, health screenings, and safe sleep support.

Oregon Health & Science University Foundation - Doernbecher Children's Hospital Injury Prevention Program
Over the past year, 72 safe sleep kits were provided to families in 22 languages to ensure all received education in their native language. The program’s strong impact led to efforts to secure ongoing philanthropic support.

Phoenix Children's Hospital Foundation
Increased safe sleep awareness through 11 safe sleep classes conducted both in English and Spanish, and distributed 50 safe sleep kits while strengthening community partnerships to improve infant sleep safety.

Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center Foundation
Trained Safe Sleep Champions to educate families and hosted community baby showers to deliver safe sleep education and supplies to 115 families.

Stork Support of Northern Colorado
Ensured 40 families who otherwise didn’t have access to needed equipment had a safe space for their babies to sleep.

Baby Safety Alliance launches new campaign and free Baby Safety Guide during September’s Baby Safety Month

MT. LAUREL, N.J., September 2, 2025 – Every parent wants to protect their baby. But even the most well-meaning caregivers often make safety mistakes without realizing it. This September during Baby Safety Month , the Baby Safety Alliance is spotlighting the three most common baby safety mistakes and how to fix them.

“Parenting today comes with a flood of advice, but not all of it is rooted in safety science,” said Lisa Trofe, Executive Director of the Baby Safety Alliance. “We want to cut through the noise and give parents guidance they can trust. These three mistakes are common and fixable. Knowing about them can help save lives.”

Mistake #1: Believing All Baby Products Are Safe

Not all baby products are required to undergo safety testing consistent with industry standards, and risk increases with secondhand or imported items. In 2023, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued more than 200 recalls, including over 20 involving infant and child products. A 2024 What to Expect survey found that 65% of Gen Z and 59% of Millennial parents are buying more secondhand due to inflation.

The Fix:

Check cpsc.gov/recalls or nhtsa.gov/recalls before using any baby product. Look for the Verified Product Seal from the Baby Safety Alliance , which confirms a product has passed independent testing and meets current safety standards.

Mistake #2: Using Car Seats Incorrectly or Moving Kids to the Next Stage Too Soon

Car seats save lives, but to provide the best protection, they must be used correctly. Unfortunately, many families make critical mistakes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), half of all car seats are misused in a way that can reduce their ability to protect a child during a crash. Common issues include loose harnesses, incorrect recline angles, and moving a child into a booster seat too soon.

New federal regulations require car seats to include clearer, easier-to-understand instruction labels for proper use. Car seats will also be required to meet side-impact testing standards, and some models already comply with those requirements today. These changes were driven by years of advocacy from the Baby Safety Alliance , Safe Kids Worldwide and other advocacy groups.

The Fix:

Read and follow the instructions that come with your car seat. If you have questions, contact the manufacturer's customer service. You can also have your car seat checked by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), usually at no charge. Checks are available nationwide, including during Child Passenger Safety Week, September 21-27. Find tools and technician directories at SafeKids.org and BabySafetyMonth.org .

Mistake #3: Creating an Unsafe Sleep Environment Without Realizing It

Soft bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, and inclined sleepers may seem cozy, but can increase risk of suffocation. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports that nearly 3,500 babies die each year in the U.S. from sleep-related causes.

The Fix:

Follow the ABCs of safe sleep: Alone, on their Back, in a Crib or bassinet with a firm, flat surface. Keep the sleep space free of soft objects, and never let a baby sleep in a swing or lounger.

“Many parents are trying to create comfort, not realizing that what looks cozy to us can actually be dangerous for a baby,” said Lisa Trofe, Executive Director of the Baby Safety Alliance. “We want families to know that simple, bare, and firm is not just safe—it’s lifesaving.”

This year’s campaign centers on Baby Safety 101 , a free digital manual from the Baby Safety Foundation that gives parents practical, trustworthy guidance for their baby’s first year. The manual distills evidence-based guidance from pediatricians, safety experts, and an emergency room physician into a short, visually engaging format that parents can trust. Covering everything from safe sleep and babyproofing to feeding and product selection, it puts reliable, practical answers right at families’ fingertips.

“For more than 60 years, JPMA has worked to advance the safety of products used to care for babies and young children. Safety Advocates Join Together on National Heatstroke Prevention Day to Prevent Hot Car Tragedies

An average of 37 children die each year, and all hot car tragedies are preventable

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., May 1, 2025 – As part of a collaborative effort to raise awareness about preventing hot car tragedies, representatives from JPMA Cares, Safe Kids Worldwide (SKW), and Kids and Car Safety are joining local health professionals, first responders, and safety advocates at the Mitchell Learning Academy in Jacksonville, Florida to share proven strategies and tips for parents, caregivers, and bystanders.

Since 1990, at least 1,125 children have died from heatstroke while unattended in vehicles, including one preventable tragedy so far this year. On average, 37 children die each year–that’s one child every nine days.

“Our goal is to make sure that heatstroke doesn’t claim the life of another child,” said Torine Creppy, president of SKW. “As temperatures rise and schedules change, there’s a real danger that we may see more tragedies this year. Losing one child is one too many, so we’re working with partners to preventing children from dying in hot cars by using every tool necessary, including awareness, education, technology, and advocacy.”

Technologies to prevent hot car deaths are already available, and more continue to develop. Many vehicles have systems that remind the driver to check the back seat under certain conditions. Others have more advanced systems that sense the presence of a child or other vulnerable occupants. Several car seat brands have sensor systems that are paired with the driver’s smartphone to provide warnings when a child is unintentionally left behind.

“Because children are precious and behavior is difficult to change, car seat and vehicle makers are voluntarily adding sensing and reminder features,” said Director of Child Passenger Safety for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association Joe Colella. “These technologies help prevent hot car tragedies. However, even with advancing technology, I recommend that parents always practice ‘Stop, Look, Lock.’ At each destination, check your back seat and lock the doors before walking away.”

Parents, caregivers, and bystanders are encouraged to help reduce the number of hot car deaths by taking the following steps:

● Look before you lock, and never leave a young child alone in a car, not even for a minute.

● Lock your doors, and keep your keys and key fobs out of the reach of children. Ask your neighbors to do the same.

● Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car that you’ll need at your final destination, such as a phone, briefcase, or purse.

● Arrange for your childcare provider to contact you right away if your child hasn’t arrived as scheduled.

● If you see a child alone in a car, take action. Call 911. Emergency personnel are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

Cribs for Kids, JPMA Cares, and Safe Kids Worldwide Launch Safe Sleep Building Blocks Grant Program

PITTSBURGH, PA, March 6, 2025 -- Cribs for Kids is proud to partner with JPMA Cares and Safe Kids Worldwide to launch the Safe Sleep Building Blocks Grant Program, a nationwide initiative designed to break down barriers to safe sleep education and resources. Made possible through a generous grant from JPMA Cares, this program will provide essential infant safe sleep products, education, and community outreach support to organizations across the U.S.

"Tragically, each year in the United States, about 3,700 babies die from sleep-related deaths, and underserved communities are impacted disproportionately," said JPMA Cares Executive Director Lisa Trofe. "That's why JPMA Cares is committed to supporting the important work of Cribs for Kids. Through our strong partnership, we will ensure parents and caregivers have the knowledge and resources they need to make safe sleep decisions for babies and young children. Together, we will advance the vital work of keeping babies safe while they sleep."

The Safe Sleep Building Blocks Grant Program specifically targets Safe Kids Worldwide Coalition Members and other like-minded organizations that are committed to safe sleep but face challenges in expanding their efforts. By combining the strengths of JPMA Cares' Safe Sleep Campaign, Cribs for Kids' extensive administrative, supply chain, and outreach expertise, and the dedication of Safe Kids Coalition Members, this collaboration aims to maximize impact and reach families in need.

The nonprofit organization has a goal to raise $20,000 for its Safe Sleep Campaign by the end of GivingTuesday on December 3, 2024.

In a testament to shared belief and unwavering commitment, three former chief staff executives of JPMA have pledged to match the donations three to one for a total potential match of $60,000. Collectively, they are calling this "The Power of Three" pledge. Their generosity exemplifies leadership rooted in compassion, and their hope is to inspire others to do the same.

"We've made significant strides in baby safety over the years, yet challenges remain," shared Bill MacMillan, CAE, former JPMA Executive Director, and current JPMA Cares Board Member. ATLANTA, November 12, 2024 - For the fifth year, on November 18, buildings, bridges, monuments, and homes across the country will shine green to recognize the importance of preventing injuries and violence, the number one killer of people 1-44 years. JPMA Cares Awards Microgrants to 11 Organizations Advancing Safe Sleep for Babies

MT. LAUREL, N.J., OCT. 3, 2024 — October marks Safe Sleep and SIDS Awareness Month, founded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the National Institutes of Health. Tragically, approximately 3,700 babies in the U.S. were lost to sleep-related deaths in 2022 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This number reflects an increase in sleep-related infant deaths over recent years, adding urgency to the need to better address this growing problem.

That’s why JPMA Cares , the nonprofit foundation of the juvenile products industry, launched a Safe Sleep Campaign with other non-profit partners earlier this year. The campaign aims to deliver easy-to-understand, consistent advice about safe sleep to parents and caregivers across geographies, ethnicities, religions, and cultures.

As a continuation of the Safe Sleep Campaign, JPMA Cares recently announced the recipients of its 2024-2025 microgrants to organizations championing safe sleep for babies and young children. From a field of nearly 40 applicants, the following 11 organizations were selected to receive microgrants:

Baby Safety Month to Focus on 5 Things To Do Before Bringing Baby Home

MT. LAUREL, N.J., Sept. 3, 2024 -- September is JPMA Baby Safety Month™ , an annual time to focus on keeping infants and children safe. Baby Safety Month was established by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) more than four decades ago to help parents safely navigate early childhood.

"At JPMA, we're passionate about keeping babies and young children safe," said Lisa Trofe, executive director of JPMA. "Many times, that means reaching out to parents and caregivers to ensure they have the information they need to make safe choices for their children. As part of Baby Safety Month this year, we're promoting five things every parent should do before bringing baby home. Throughout September, we'll highlight expert-approved, easy-to-follow guidance to keep babies safe. The more people we have who champion baby safety, the more childhood injuries and deaths we can prevent."

The five things JPMA recommends doing before bringing a baby home—and the reasons why—are:

Create a safe sleep environment.
Tragically, nearly 3,500 infants die each year in the U.S. from sleep-related deaths according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Click here for expert-approved safe sleep tips.

Create a safe play environment.
In the U.S., nearly 5.6 million children are treated for injuries in emergency departments every year according to Safe Kids Worldwide. These are often serious injuries that can affect them for a lifetime. For tips on general baby safety and babyproofing, click here .

Practice car seat safety during each and every ride.
Each day in the U.S., 429 children are injured and three are killed in car crashes according to NHTSA. Car seats can reduce the risk of crash injuries overall and can reduce the risk of fatalities by as much as 71 percent. However, mistakes in using car seats according to the manufacturer instructions can compromise the protection they offer. Click here for car seat resources or view car seat videos here .

Register each and every new baby product.
Registering your baby products ensures you receive important safety alerts directly from the manufacturer. The information provided on product registration cards will not be used by the manufacturer for any reason other than a safety alert regarding the product. More information on registering your baby products can be found here.

Check for product recalls prior to buying or using any secondhand baby or children's products.
An April 2024 survey by What to Expect showed that 65 percent of Gen Z parents and 59 percent of Millennial parents are buying more secondhand products due to inflation. Recalled or otherwise compromised products can pose serious risks, so always check the appropriate Federal regulator website to ensure safety — nhtsa.gov/recalls for car seats and cpsc.gov/recalls for other baby and children's products. The recommendation to check for recalls also applies to products that were used for a previous baby.

37 Children Die in Hot Car Tragedies Each Year; Learn Prevention Tips Today

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., May 1, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today marks National Heatstroke Prevention Day, and in recognition, JPMA Cares and Safe Kids Worldwide (SKW) are reminding parents, caregivers, and neighbors about the dangers of heatstroke and sharing strategies to prevent child injuries and deaths in hot vehicles.

Since 1998, an alarming 969 children have been killed in hot car tragedies—an average of 37 children each year. Thousands more have survived with varying types and severities of injury. These tragedies have occurred regardless of parent or caregiver education, profession, income, and other demographics, and all could have been prevented.

Heatstroke occurs when the body is unable to cool itself quickly enough. Young children are particularly at risk, since a child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult's. When a child's internal temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit, major organs begin to shut down, and when their temperature reaches 107 degrees, the child can die.

Hot car deaths have occurred when the outside temperature was below 60 degrees, because vehicle interiors become much hotter than outside temperatures. Research shows the temperature inside a car can heat up 19 degrees in just 10 minutes. Cracking the windows does not slow the heating process or significantly decrease the maximum temperature of a vehicle.

"Half of hot car deaths occur when children are inadvertently left in vehicles by caregivers, and these cases typically follow a change in routine," said JPMA Director of Child Passenger Safety Joe Colella. "With easy behavioral changes, parents, caregivers, and neighbors can prevent these horrible tragedies."

A common scenario is that a parent may intend to drop a child off at daycare. Once on their way, the parent begins thinking about driving or the many things on their to-do list. If routines have changed, the parent is tired or stressed, or there are other distractions, the parent may head directly to work or home. Without a visual cue, they unknowingly leave the child in the vehicle.

"Safe Kids Worldwide, JPMA Cares, and other injury prevention groups are committed to ending these preventable tragedies to babies and young children," said SKW President Torine Creppy. "Whether you are a parent, a caregiver, or a concerned bystander, we're calling on everyone to be part of the solution and help save lives."

Beyond the children inadvertently left in vehicles, a quarter of hot car deaths occur when a small child enters a vehicle on their own, the door closes, and the child becomes trapped in the vehicle. Parents, caregivers, neighbors, and bystanders can prevent hot car deaths with the following steps:

Never leave a young child alone in a car, not even for a minute.
Look before you lock—develop a habit to check the rear seat each time you park the car.
Lock your vehicle's doors, and keep your keys and key fobs out of children's reach. Ask your neighbors to do the same.
Create reminders. Put something in the back of your car that you'll need at your final destination such as a phone, briefcase, or purse.
Arrange for your childcare provider to contact you right away if your child hasn't arrived as scheduled.
If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel wants you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations, and one call could save a life.

Donate Car Seats for Community Baby Shower

The Rutherford County Health Department, an office of the Tennessee Health Department, is seeking car seat donations for its February 4th Community Baby Shower in honor of Dr. Robert Sanders.

In 1977, Dr. Robert Sanders, a beloved pediatrician, successfully lobbied for the passage of the Child Passenger Protection Act, a Tennessee law that requires parents to properly restrain children under age four in federally approved car seats. It was the first law of its kind in the nation and the world. By 1985, all 50 states in the U.S. had passed similar laws. As a result, Dr. Sanders was widely known in Tennessee as “Dr. Seat Belt”. He received the 2004 American Academy of Pediatrics Fellow Achievement Award and the 2003 Distinguished Career Award from the American Public Health Association for his work.

Thanks to Dr. Sanders, tens of thousands of lives have been saved. Furthermore, a new awareness of motor vehicle safety resulted in mandatory seatbelt laws for adults as well.

In honor of his work, the Rutherford County Health Department will host a community baby shower on February 4, 2023 from 10:00am – 1:00pm. This free event will include hosted discussions and education and information other state and nonprofit support programs. Additionally, the event will include car seat checks and diaper bags filled with essential infant health and safety products.

Country’s Top Injury and Violence Prevention Advocates Join Forces

New York, N.Y., Nov. 18, 2022 - While attention is being focused on new COVID variants and increasing numbers of children battling RSV, some healthcare providers and community advocates across the country are working to expose two other elements of concern: injuries and violence. They are the number one killer and cause of hospitalization of people 1 to 44 years old and many of them are preventable with the use of safety practices, products, and the implementation of strong legislative policies. That is why JPMA Cares and the country’s top injury and violence prevention organizations are joining forces Friday, November 18, 2022, for the third annual National Injury Prevention Day.

The Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Safe Kids Worldwide, Safe States Alliance, the American Trauma Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Be SMART — a program of Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, The Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research, the Trauma Center Association of America, JPMA Cares, and I’m Safe will be among those working to raise awareness about the need for change and to provide communities the tools to make it happen.

“It takes all of us to make a difference,” Barbara Barlow, MD, Professor of Surgery in Epidemiology at Columbia University and Founder of the Injury Free Coalition for Kids said. “Working together gives us a strong voice and we are working to bring in the voices of others.”

The day will begin with a one-hour webinar at 10:00 am EST, where Christopher Jones, PharmD, DrPH, MPH, the CDC’s Acting Director for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) and a US Public Health Service Captain will join the country’s top injury and violence prevention organizations to sound the alarm about the need for prevention. At 1:00 p.m. (EST), the public is invited to join everyone and take part in a live national conversation about the country’s top injury and violence concerns during a one-hour twitter chat using the hashtag #BeInjuryFree. Throughout the day, a number of cities will focus on injury prevention within their own communities. JPMA Cares to Honor Dr. Sadiqa Kendi with the 2022 Impact Award

MT. LAUREL, N.J., Nov. 1, 2022 — JPMA Cares is pleased to announce Dr. Sadiqa Kendi as the organization’s 2022 Impact Award winner. Dr. Kendi serves as the Division Chief of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine. She is an expert in pediatric injury prevention, with a focus on health equity.

“We are thrilled to recognize Dr. Sadiqa Kendi for the tremendous work she’s doing to make a positive impact on the long-term success of babies and young children,” said Executive Director of JPMA and JPMA Cares Lisa Trofe. “Dr. Kendi’s work directly aligns with the mission of JPMA Cares, as we work to reduce barriers to healthy development, ensure fundamental needs are met, and promote a safe and nurturing environment for babies and young children to learn and grow.”

Dr. Kendi is a pediatric emergency medicine physician; a certified child passenger safety technician; a member of the executive committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention; and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research. She is pursuing a Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a Bloomberg American Health Initiative Fellow, an initiative that provides public health training to leaders at the forefront of social change.

Dr. Kendi graduated from the Yale School of Medicine. She received her pediatrics training from the Social Pediatrics Program at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, where she spent an additional year as a pediatric chief resident. She completed her fellowship training in pediatric emergency medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

“I’m honored to be recognized with the JPMA Cares Impact Award,” said Dr. Kendi. “As a pediatric emergency medicine physician with an interest in injury prevention and health equity, I know how important it is to ensure that all babies and young children are given the opportunity to be healthy in mind and body. Hurricane Ian Relief Efforts Information

In response to the devastation from Hurricane Ian, JPMA Cares is sharing the below information from Safe Kids Southwest Florida for companies and individuals interested in donating or volunteering.

On the morning of Sept. 28, Hurricane Ian intensified into a Category 4 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, just shy of a Category 5 storm. Ian came ashore near Cayo Costa, which is in Lee County, Florida, at 3pm with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph, tying the record for the fifth-strongest hurricane on record to strike the United States. It was the strongest hurricane to hit Florida since Michael in 2018. It was also the first Category 4 hurricane to impact Southwest Florida since Charley in 2004. The storm moved very slowly at 8 mph.

Ian thrashed parts of Florida’s western coast, bringing intense winds, heavy rainfall, and catastrophic storm surges. A storm surge with inundation of an unprecedented 12 to 18 feet above ground level was reported along the southwestern Florida coast, and the city of Fort Myers itself was hit particularly hard with a 7.26 foot surge—a record high https://graphics.axios.com/2022-09-28-ian-surge/images/2022-09-28-ian-surge-tablet.png . The data also shows storm surge reached well inland in many areas. For example, an estimated nine-foot storm surge meant a foot or two of water spread miles inland in areas. Such high water helps explain in part why so many of the more than 50 deaths reported in Lee County – at least 30 – were attributed to drowning. The storm also knocked out power to more than four million customers in Florida.

In Lee County alone, 5,014 homes are destroyed, 13,213 have major destruction, 14,074 have minor destruction, and 16,591 are affected. These numbers do not include commercial buildings. However when you combine commercial and residential property, the total cost for destroyed property is $529M, $3.5B have major destruction, $2M have minor destruction, and $847M are affected. Lee County is not tracking number of cars that are damaged however according to Cox Automotive estimates, the storm destroyed between 30,000 and 70,000 cars.

Led by Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, Safe Kids Southwest Florida works to prevent unintentional childhood injury. Safe Kids Southwest Florida serves Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades Counties area families. Through education, advocacy, training and hands-on demonstrations, Safe Kids Southwest Florida supports parents, educators, safety professionals, caregivers and the media with evidence-based data and injury prevention strategies on a variety of topics including prevention of pedestrian and bicycle injuries, burns, drowning, motor vehicle injuries and more.

Safe Kids Southwest Florida is seeking donations at this time to help support our community that are dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Ian. We have many families that have lost their homes and have relocated in with friends, family members, and shelters. They do not have a safe place for their babies to sleep therefore we are asking for play yards. We are seeking car seats, as mentioned, many families lost their cars to flooding/storm surge, which included their car seats. We lost between 50 to 100 employee cars in the parking lot alone of Golisano/HealthPark due to flooding. We have helped over 20 of those staff members with car seats already. We lost 2 of our outreach vans and a trailer that pulled Safety Sam( Our ATV robot ). Sadly, Safety Sam is destroyed as well. Many pool cages are gone leaving pools exposed so we are asking for door alarms. We are also seeking carbon monoxide detectors as even 3 weeks since Hurricane past, many homes are still without power and are using generators. My CO detector actually went off the day after the storm. I learned just how important this device is!

Safe Kids Southwest Florida has checked in with many of our child passenger safety technicians and have already started distributing seats through some of our first responders partners that are technicians. We could also use some support of any technicians if you have time to spare.

MT. LAUREL, N.J., Oct. 11, 2022 — JPMA Cares will host the 2nd annual Benefit for Babies on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. ET at SPIN New York 54, 7 East 54th Street, New York, NY 10022. Those interested in advancing the health and safety of babies and young children are invited to attend, including manufacturers and retailers of baby and children’s products.

The JPMA Cares Benefit for Babies is all about coming together to have a good time while advancing the foundation’s mission, which is to contribute to the long-term success of babies and young children by reducing barriers to healthy development, ensuring fundamental needs are met, and promoting a safe and nurturing environment to learn and grow.

JPMA Receives 2022 ASAE Power of Associations Silver Award for JPMA Cares

Founded in 2021 by JPMA, JPMA Cares is a charitable organization that contributes to the long-term success of babies and young children by reducing barriers to healthy development, ensuring fundamental needs are met, and promoting a safe and nurturing environment to learn and grow.

The organization works to improve outcomes for all children and is intentional about meeting the needs of babies and young children. JPMA Cares Provides Home Safety Kids to Give Families a Safe Start in their New Homes

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., May 18, 2022 – JPMA Cares, an industry charity founded by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to benefit babies and young children in need, recently hosted a service activity in which volunteers packed home safety kits with products donated by member companies and then donated them to Family Promise. Each kit contained products from Safety 1st and KidCo, including a tools-free kitchen safety set, a tools-free bathroom safety set, a TV/furniture safety strap, a refrigerator door lock and foam corner bumpers.

Dorel Juvenile Group, parent company of the Safety 1st brand, donated 15,000 items to help families baby-proof their homes, and KidCo donated an additional 500 products. The value of the donated products totaled $214,455, and the home safety kits will benefit approximately 3,000 families through Family Promise Affiliates in Shenandoah and Roanoke, Virginia. In addition, JPMA Cares volunteers created “Welcome Home” cards for the families receiving the home safety kits.

The mission of Family Promise is to help families experiencing homelessness and low-income families achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response.

“Family Promise focuses on housing security for families, which is a key driver of successful long-term outcomes for babies and young children,” said Executive Director of JPMA and JPMA Cares Kelly Mariotti. “Likewise, JPMA Cares is focused on the long-term success of babies and young children by reducing barriers to healthy development, ensuring fundamental needs are met, and promoting a safe and nurturing environment for them to learn and grow. The missions of our organizations are compatible, and I’m thankful to the product donors and volunteers who made this service activity possible.”

During the JPMA Cares service activity, Family Promise CEO Claas Ehlers spoke to the volunteers. “The impact of homelessness on children is well-researched: 47 percent suffer from anxiety, depression or withdrawal; 42 percent drop out of school at least once; they are eight to nine times more likely to repeat grades; they are seven times more likely to attempt suicide; and they are three times more likely to be placed in special education programs. While these numbers are bleak, they motivate us to keep moving forward because Family Promise believes every child deserves a home. With partners like JPMA Cares, we can make our vision a reality.”

Ehlers went on to say, “Family Promise is most grateful to JPMA Cares for its support of our Virginia Affiliates. We are appreciative of the team’s hard work in creating home safety kits that will go a long way for our families to ultimately improve the future of their children.” The home safety kits will go to families moving into permanent homes from shelters and to families working to remain stably housed and avoid an eviction or foreclosure. The kits will help provide a safe environment for families with young children.

JPMA Cares is bringing the juvenile products community together to improve long-term outcomes for babies and young children. In addition to its partnership with Family Promise, JPMA Cares will host a car seat check in Washington, D.C. on September 24, 2022 and provide essential items to families across the country in celebration of National Injury Prevention Day on November 18, 2022. JPMA Cares will also host its annual Benefit for Babies on December 1, 2022 in New York City.

The Switzerland-based international organization seeks to help people affected by the conflict and support the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross.

JPMA Cares focuses on several important programs that uniquely support its mission, including the inaugural Benefit for Babies, which takes place this evening.

JPMA Cares Benefit for Babies. On Dec. 9, 2021, JPMA Cares will host its first fundraising event, the JPMA Cares Benefit for Babies. The Benefit for Babies will include the opportunity for supporters to host their own, concurrent party anywhere in the country. The event will also include the much-anticipated JPMA Innovation Awards announcement, an annual awards ceremony that recognizes the top innovation in baby and children’s products. Programming will be live-streamed to all party locations, large or small.

National Injury Prevention Day. On November 18, 2021, the Injury Free Coalition for Kids hosted its annual National lnjury Prevention Day to raise awareness of preventable injuries and how to take steps to keep children safe. JPMA Cares supported this effort by providing more than $200,000 worth of requested baby and safety products to local sites based in trauma centers throughout the United States.

Partnership with the UN Foundation’s Shot@Life Program . Shot@Life is a grassroots advocacy campaign of the United Nations Foundation that champions global childhood immunization. Too many families still lack access to simple, proven tools or information that can keep their children safe. The UN Foundation and JPMA Cares are partnering to develop a new initiative that will engage consumers and companies to raise funds for programs that protect the health of babies around the world.
